RH Fibreboard Ltd is a family run company that specialises in the design and production of a wide variety of corrugated cardboard products. After a very successful SMED (Changeover reduction project) with South West MAS it was decided that improving motivation and communications within the management teams would lead to improvements throughout the company and ultimately increase business.

“Since our investment in our team leaders with the help of Andy Shipley we have seen improvements across the board. The team leaders are now taking all the day-to-day decisions for their departments including production planning. Things are going from strength to strength. Direct saving to the company in the amount of overtime been worked on the shop floor has been reduced by 40% compared to this time last year with sales increased by 5.3 %. Implementing change in any company has always been difficult and manufacturing seems to have suffered from a culture of ‘us and them’ when it comes to management lead directives. Much of the success of Lean manufacturing has been to involve the whole team in the whole process and so empower and encourage everyone to bed part of the solution and the success. But to do this you need to encourage and lead from the top with a management team that are ready to listen, encourage and if necessary roll their sleeves up and get stuck in. RH Fibreboard took three team leaders and sent them on a variety of South West MAS motivational workshops that have been designed for managers who are eager to get more from their people and improve their own management and manufacturing skills.

They have not only seen a 40% drop in overtime but a 5% increase in sales over the same period whilst also freeing up their Production Manager for essential strategic planning for the future.
