Terry Slater
Board Member
Terry is passionately committed to UK manufacturing and joined the Board of SWMAS in early 2009.
He is a first class Business Studies honours Graduate from the University of Nottingham and a member of Institute of Personnel & Development.
His interest in the manufacturing industry started in 1972 in his role as Personnel Director at Lucas Industries plc in Birmingham. In 1979 he went on to become Personnel Director of Stafford-based General Electric Company, a former major UK company involved in consumer and defence electronics, communications and engineering.
From 1981, Terry spent 10 years working as Personnel Director for Ferranti International in Manchester. This former major UK electrical engineering and equipment firm was primarily known for its defence electronics and power grid systems. The company also became famous in the computer industry for building the first commercially available computer, the Ferranti Mark I.
In 1991 Terry moved on to become HR Director at Devonport Management Ltd (DML) in Plymouth where he managed over 100 staff. DML was established to run Devonport Royal Dockyard and acts as Prime Support contractors to the Royal Navy, providing comprehensive through-life support for submarines, surface ships and equipment.
Terry joined EEF Ltd South West 11 years ago and now holds the position of Region Director. EEF employs approximately 42 staff in its South West office and supports and it promotes the interests of engineering, manufacturing and technology based industries. It also offers services to member companies in the Employment Relations and Employment Law, Health, Safety, Climate and Environment, Education and Skills, and Management Development to over 6000 manufacturing, engineering and technology companies.
He is a member of the CBI Regional Council, a Chairman of the SW Industrial Development Board, and was selected by the Tribunal Service to become a panel member on Employment Tribunals.
