Stephen Cully

Board Member

Stephen Cully (BSc (Eng), CEng, FIMechE) is a Professor of Engineering Design and Head of Design and Manufacture in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Bath University.

He brings the experience of a career and academic background devoted entirely to manufacturing and engineering. He worked in the Steel, Fluid Power and Rubber sectors before becoming starting his academic career. He is a Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, the fastest growing professional engineering institution in the UK.

Stephen is Chair of the Manufacturing Industries Divisional Board and a board member of the Technical Strategy Board and Council. His expertise and passion for manufacturing led him to become a judge for the IMechE Manufacturing Excellence Awards(MX), (supported by the MAS).

He is an expert on information and knowledge management and currently serves with Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) as a reviewer, member of the Engineering College, and as a member and chair of a number of review and allocation committees for the General Engineering, Engineering for Manufacture programmes and the Follow on Fund for Technology Transfer, which he is particularly interested in.

He is a reviewer for the Royal Academy of Finland for their programmes in Design and Manufacturing and IT.

Stephen has an unrivalled international contact book and is currently working on projects with the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore, several Ivy League American Universities and he recently engaged the CEO of the 3MCorporation to give the annual keynote address at Bath University.

He has recently arranged a secondment for one of his Senior Research Fellows with the SWMAS.

Married with two children he is a keen sportsman and used to enjoy playing rugby, is a now an active and qualified RFU referee.
