Phil Halse
Manufacturing Specialist for MAS-SW

This month in the MAS-SW e-zine we are focussing on the importance of measurement. Manufacturers should by no means overlook measurement or its importance – particularly its ability to predict emerging trends, rectify numerous production issues and enable any necessary remedial action to be made.

Within a well run and highly organised manufacturing facility, we expect to find all activities and actions are focused on achieving customer demand, with everything else classed as waste or an opportunity for improvement. The same is true of measurement and data – we should be measuring activities and actions that are beneficial to our internal and external customers as well as understanding how our business is performing.

This is often easier said then done, as it is all about striking a balance between measuring enough to know where you are going and measuring too much, to the point where no action is taken. To reconcile these two concepts is a challenge - even for those manufacturers that recognise and value measurement and have Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) in place.

One of the challenges for MAS-SW specialists is to help manufacturers select the most appropriate measurement techniques to suit their business requirements. Programmes have been designed to help introduce and improve measurement techniques, such as the Productivity and Competitiveness (PAC) Programme and the Six-Sigma Greenbelt Programme. PAC helps to select and capture significant data through a variety of measurement exercises that together enable a company to measure how effective, efficient and profitable it is. Six-Sigma offers a step-by-step programme to identify the causes of process variation.

"When times are tough it is essential to look at all aspects of your business and I cannot stress the importance of measurement as it allows us to review what can be improved."

Lyncolec Office in India

Dorset manufacturer bucks trend

According to the CBI’s latest monthly Industrial Trends Survey, optimism is growing amongst Britain’s manufacturers, but conditions in the sector remain challenging. Eight per cent of companies described the volume of their total order books as above normal, while 56 per cent said they were below normal.

However, despite tough economic conditions, one Dorset-based manufacturer, Lyncolec Ltd which produces Printed Circuit Boards (PCB) has been bucking this trend and with the help of the Manufacturing Advisory Service in the South West (MAS-SW) and the UKTI opened its first office in Bangalore, India in July 2009.

Nigel Rogers, managing director of Lyncolec, said: "This year has been hard but we have remained strong and focused which has enabled us to successfully launch our Bangalore site and enter international markets.

"Despite our new site launch we have seen a 10-15% reduction in orders in 2009, however we have made sure that our business processes are as streamlined as possible by measuring and reviewing these processes.

"When times are tough it is essential to look at all aspects of your business and I cannot stress the importance of measurement as it allows us to review what can be improved. We use a number of measurement tools including, lean manufacturing, 5S and SC21 to name a few.

"As well as signposting the services of the UKTI to us, the advice and support from MAS-SW has allowed us to make more informed decisions on market trends and business improvements. However, most importantly it has been invaluable to be able to discuss things with a friendly, supportive and informed team."

Lyncolec, which has an annual turnover of £2.2m, has grown its workforce from 10 to 55 in the 27 years since it was established. Since the onset of the recession Lyncolec has battened down the hatches to ensure that the business is fit for purpose when the downturn lifts.

In 2010, Lyncolec intends to establish a manufacturing presence in India to manufacture Aerospace approved PCBs at AS9100 & NADCAP levels. This program will provide a secure low cost region for aerospace parts and will allow Lyncolec UK to focus on fast-turn high technology PCBs. 2010 will also see Lyncolec establish a Research & Development department in the UK for specialist applications.

Carbon Trust Launches Scrappage Scheme

A survey by the Carbon Trust has discovered that a large number of British businesses are being forced to "make do and mend" with old, inefficient equipment. The main reason behind this is that over half (52%) don’t have enough money to upgrade their equipment, whilst 60% of SMEs wait until it breaks down completely before buying replacements.

To help combat this problem, the Carbon Trust has launched The Big Business Refit campaign, which aims to help businesses scrap their old power-guzzling equipment and replace it with new equipment that is cheaper and more efficient to run. This will be a step towards reducing the £3.3bn a year that businesses are spending in wasted energy.

The scheme will run until 31 March 2010 and offers expert guidance, a free energy saving assessment as well as the opportunity to apply for interest free funding.

Manufacturers See Trading Conditions Stabilise

South West manufacturers do not expect any significant improvement in trading conditions this year according to a survey conducted by EEF - the manufacturers’ organisation - and consultancy BDO Stoy Hayward.

This was the resounding opinion from manufacturers in the region despite having weathered the economic storm better than many of their counterparts elsewhere in the UK – faring better in terms of output of new orders, although holding back on capital investment.

Sixty-four per cent of manufacturers reported increased or stable performance, compared with just 44 per cent in the previous quarter.

MAS-SW Supports Latest CBI Figures

Recent figures for the manufacturing sector released by the CBI showed that the outlook for production over the next three months is the most positive since June 2008.

The CBI Industrial Trends Survey revealed that 32 per cent of UK manufacturers expected the volume of output to fall over the next three months, while 27 per cent predicted an increase. Although the resulting balance of minus five per cent represents a slight fall in output, it is the least negative prediction since June 2008.

Following publication of the figures, Simon Howes of MAS-SW said: "Manufacturers in the South West need to ensure that their businesses are fit for purpose with positive signs of an upturn on the horizon. As with any recession there are still opportunities for businesses that have their house in order in terms of production, finance, stock levels, staffing and measurement."
