Carbon is fast becoming the new currency as concerns grow over the environment and businesses and consumers alike try their best to become more eco-friendly. To help combat global warming the government has set challenging carbon reduction targets of 80% by 2050 as well as introducing legislation and initiatives such as the Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC), Renewable Obligation Certificates (ROCs) and Climate Change Levy (CCL), all of which are changing the way we do business.

So how can we reduce our environmental impact by 80%, recover from a significant recession and still have a great quality of life? It’s a tough one, but as the Hitch Hiker’s Guide to the Galaxy states: don’t panic, but do something. Reducing carbon means greater efficiency and this is a good thing. We have absolute resource constraint in several key areas and hence doing more with less will have economic as well as environmental benefits. We have seen a doubling in fuel efficiency in some cars over the last ten years and a reduction in packaging on many products. Not only has this reduced environmental impact but it has also reduced costs of materials, shipping and storage for those businesses involved.

Furthermore, the world market for low carbon technology is expanding rapidly, by four per cent each year, even in the recession. This presents significant opportunities in terms of diversification and innovation and a chance for businesses to generate new revenue streams. You can read more about these opportunities and how to take advantage of them in the news section below.

Climate change is a problem that needs solving, and we can solve it. But we don’t have long. It’s time we realised the symbiotic relationship between environmental improvement and economic growth.

As a region, the South West is leading the way and has recently been declared the UK’s first low carbon economic area. MAS-SW offers tailored support to companies on low carbon design, manufacture, supply-chains, and new markets. With a dedicated team of specialists on hand to offer training and expert advice, why not see how they can help you.

What steps have been taken to implement green initiatives within your business?

We work to the philosophy 'don't buy it in the first place' – so we have moved from tinned goods as much as possible to pouches, limiting what we throw away. Also, we buy recycled wherever possible.

What inspired you to take these steps?

Doing the right thing makes you more profitable and is a great exercise to involve the whole team.

What piece of advice would you give to any manufacturers looking to reduce their carbon footprint?

Get advice – we got free audits, advice and some subsidised consultancy. No-one can work it all out by themselves.

Moles Brewery: Now We're Cooking!

Wiltshire-based Moles Brewery / Cascade Drinks Ltd is driving forward the green agenda in the South West with the help of MAS-SW by using cooking oil to power its vehicles delivering ale to over 300 pubs, restaurants and hotels in the region.

One of a pioneering group of 'microbreweries' which started producing Real Ales in the early 1980's, Moles Brewery produces a range of Real Ales (cask beers) and seasonal Ales, many of which have won awards at local and regional Real Ale festivals.

The business which has a turnover of nearly £5 million and employs over 20 people within its brewery and pub company (Cascade Public House Management Ltd), recently branched out and invested in new technology to produce its own bio-diesel to power its fleet of trucks delivering ale across the counties of Wiltshire, Avon and Gloucestershire.

Keith Reynolds, operations director of Moles Brewery said: “The green revolution is well underway and we are very keen to let everyone know how easy it can be to adopt green practices that have environmental and commercial benefits.

"As we deliver to over 300 businesses across three counties we spotted the ideal opportunity for us to start using bio-diesel as we were able to deliver our ales and collect the waste cooking oil at the same time without incurring any additional costs or increasing our carbon footprint.

"After speaking to the Manufacturing Advisory Service in the South West (MAS-SW) for advice on the best equipment to use we were able to secure a grant to help towards the cost of the machinery we needed to convert the waste oil to bio-diesel. We now produce 100 litres of bio-diesel using an hour of one person’s time at half the price of what we would pay at the pump. I can safely say that we won’t be going back to using petrol or diesel."

Mark Garner, manufacturing specialist at MAS-SW, said: "Moles Brewery are really raising the environmental bar in the region and we are very proud that they are flying the green flag for manufacturers in the South West."

The scheme has been so successful, saving Moles Brewery over £15,000 a year on fuel costs.

Green fields of opportunity

With an increasing focus on the environment and “green” initiatives, the Manufacturing Advisory Service in the South West (MAS-SW) is urging manufacturers to innovate and expand into new markets in order to stay ahead of the game.

"Green fields" of opportunity are emerging, with low carbon offering significant business opportunities. Manufacturers could access new markets and unlock cash flow by looking at the provision of Environmental Goods and Services (EGS) and the adoption of more resource and energy efficient practices into the workplace.

The UK is the sixth largest low carbon and EGS economy, with the South West recently named by Lord Mandelson as the UK's first low carbon economic area. Within the region there are over 4,000 companies engaging in the low carbon sector, either through EGS or by taking positive steps to reduce their carbon footprint. In total these companies employ around 74,000 people.

Ben Powis, environmental business development manager for the South West Regional Development Agency (SWRDA), said: "The South West already has considerable strengths in the low carbon sector with a strong record of UK and World firsts, including the recent recognition as the UK's first low carbon economic area for marine energy. With almost one third of low carbon activity based in the manufacturing industry, it is really important that we continue to support our manufacturers in accessing the opportunities that a low carbon economy will present."

OLP Event

Celebrating operational leadership achievements

At the beginning of the month MAS-SW held an event to celebrate the achievements of delegates that had completed the Operational Leadership Programme (OLP).

The programme, which commenced on 6th May, combined off-site learning sessions with an in-company improvement project. The delegates then came together at the OLP celebratory event to present their project results.

Sue Smith, production manager for Invertec - a company that designs and manufactures lighting and interior systems for public transport and commercial vehicles - and a delegate from the OLP, said: "I have gained a lot of pride in myself and belief in others."

Following the presentations, delegates were awarded certificates in appreciation of their achievements within the programme.

Lights out for inefficient bulbs

New regulations are coming into force to phase out incandescent light bulbs and inefficient halogen lamps in order to improve energy efficiency and reduce mercury emissions. In addition, minimum efficiency ratings for all bulbs are set to be introduced.

The regulations will see the ban of frosted or pearl incandescent bulbs and clear incandescent bulbs of 100 watts or more. The ban will effect both the manufacturing and importing of such bulbs, but retailers will be given the chance to clear their stock through sales.
