The use of sustainable energy and the move towards a low carbon economy is an increasingly important area for any business to ensure they remain competitive and open to future opportunities, both in terms of their own costs and working with their supply chain. Certainly, national targets of attaining 20 per cent of all the UK’s energy needs from renewable or energy efficient sources by 2020 still remains one of the greatest challenges for the South West region and beyond.

Despite the sustainable energy industry making great leaps in moving towards this goal in recent years, there is still a long way to go and both business and the public alike have a paramount role in engaging with new technologies and changing behaviours to achieve it.

To illustrate the point, currently within the South West there has been a sustained growth of 35 per cent + year on year from 2007 in the number of full time employees within the sustainable energy sector and large growth in the associated installations of renewable and energy efficient technologies. However, we are still only approaching two per cent of our total needs from these sources.

Nevertheless, with every big challenge comes a big opportunity and there is certainly a great opportunity for manufacturing businesses in the region to look at their current energy use. With the assistance of organisations such as Regen SW and MAS-SW, which recently received a £4 million funding boost from the Government under the UK Low Carbon Transition Plan, businesses can look at becoming more efficient in their energy use and practices. This will not only help to move the region towards a low carbon economy, but also, and most importantly, both assist in boosting businesses’ bottom line profits and securing energy supply for the future. A win-win for everyone.

Precision Groveley drives costs down by going lean

A programme linking analysis of business performance with training for shopfloor employees has helped firm, Precision Groveley Engineering Ltd, embrace lean, save £138,000 and increase profitability.

Faced with increasing customer pressure to cut costs and improve delivery performance, the Christchurch-based sub-contract engineering firm looked to MAS-SW for support and help to implement lean manufacturing processes.

Peter Bennet, managing director for Precision Groveley Engineering Ltd, said: "We’d done bits of lean before but not managed to sustain it. We wanted to get lean embedded throughout the factory that’s why we opted for the productivity and competitiveness (PAC) initiative."

Nigel Jones, a PAC analyst from MAS-SW, said: "This is a great achievement for Groveley, we helped carry out 5S activity to address set-up reduction and total productive maintenance. Team members identified improvements that could be made and produced standard operating procedures (SOPs) for a new set-up process and regular maintenance activities on the machine."

South West manufacturers urged not to put all their eggs in one basket

The Manufacturing Advisory Service in the South West (MAS-SW) is urging manufacturers not to put all their eggs in one basket when it comes to sourcing additional funding or unlocking vital cash flow.

While the Government’s Enterprise Finance Guarantee (EFG) was developed to improve the availability of working capital for small businesses, some firms are finding it difficult to secure funding.

Ric Holloway, of the MAS-SW, said: “For those businesses that are growing and looking to fund that growth, accessing the EFG is no problem. However, questions arise when it comes to some smaller manufacturing firms which, due to the unprecedented economic conditions, are failing to meet the lending criteria set out.

"With some of the region’s manufacturers experiencing falls in sales, declining profit margins as well as uncertainty over order books and increasing debtors, it is important for businesses to look ahead, plan for the upturn and demonstrate that core operations will deliver good returns. Only then can businesses approach banks for additional funding through the EFG scheme."
