Roger Hunter
Business Support Product Manager - SWRDA

In a competitive global environment - business support matters. The right type of support, delivered at the right time, can make a huge difference to a business’ prospects, especially during these challenging times.

The government has a key role to play but until recently businesses felt that support had become too hard to find and too complicated to access. This wasn’t surprising when over 3,000 separate schemes were in the marketplace.

In response, earlier this year the government launched Solutions for Business, a simplified portfolio of 30 support products to help businesses start, grow and succeed. The portfolio has a single, readily recognisable brand and uses Business Link as the primary access channel. This not only makes it easier for businesses to find the support they are looking for but also means that more funding is spent at the coal face, helping businesses.

At the heart of this simplified structure is the principle of partnership working. In the South West, Business Link helps some 100,000 businesses a year, providing information, diagnosing business challenges and signposting to sources of further assistance. But we cannot afford this to be a one-off, one-way interaction.

Providers of Solutions for Business services, such as Manufacturing Advisory Service in the South West (MAS-SW) and UK Trade and Investment are setting the standard with pro-active approaches to business support, working with each other and Business Link to ensure that businesses are benefiting from this simplified, joined-up model. You can read more about this relationship and how it works in the news section below.

The South West Regional Development Agency (SWRDA) is working hard, with substantial support from European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), to unlock the region’s business potential and competitiveness. We are focusing resources where they can make the most difference, and making publicly funded business support easier to access. In this way we are helping the region’s businesses ride out the current storm and be ready for the recovery when it comes.

Businesses wanting more information about the Solutions for Business portfolio can call Business Link on 0845 600 9966, or visit

"The support we received and are continuing to receive from MAS-SW and UKTI has already made a lasting impact on our company. "

What excites you about your work?

To work as an innovator and inventor in textiles and 3-D design. What has been very exciting is to work through a transformation - it started with an intense 2-3 year period of research and creative exploration which led to my discovering an innovation in ways to use and manipulate yarn that had not been found before. A further 2-3 years considering the effect and application of my discovery. And then - getting out there in the world and finding that many thousands of people appreciate the advances I have made in yarn use and the tools I developed to use the new yarn.

In a typical day, what is guaranteed to put a smile on your face?

To be mercenary - after so much development, at the moment it is sales that make me smile - this is the proof of the validity of my products. On the not so mercenary side it is seeing a new generation craft in ways that brings them peace, pleasure and productivity.

What has been your greatest achievement whilst working with your organisation?

To change the history of textiles crafting and in doing so provide inspiration to many thousands of designers and home crafters to have renewed vigour for making something.

Who do you partner with and what are the benefits?

My business began partnering with various organisations. It is a continuing process, the results of which will not be seen in full for a few months. Some of the developments from this partnering will provide a sound basis for our business for years to come.

MAS-SW - for manufacturing introductions, for news and information on what is going on in manufacturing. We are looking forward to our Strategic Review in September - this is when I think that we will really see what the benefits of partnering with MAS-SW will do for our business.

UKTI - Passport to Export. The benefits include 12-18 months of business mentoring - helping the business to begin to trade overseas by training us in the processes of export and providing financial support for developing overseas business partners, opening of export opportunities and how to realise them, how to protect innovations - and much more.

Business Link - The benefits include many introductions - to local support networks, to local professionals such as legal and financial services, to MAS-SW, to the South West Regional Development Agency (SWRDA), to the South West Design Programme (SWDP) and training for business development and growth.

SWDP - for brand development coaching and for then providing a service to help find a suitable service provider to deliver the brand.

Turnover soars for Exeter manufacturer after switching to local supply chain

A market-leading Exeter manufacturer has seen its turnover increase by a third and improved its cashflow dramatically following a radical decision to switch from component suppliers in China to specialist suppliers in Devon and elsewhere in the UK.

HEL Performance Products, which manufactures motorcycle components, recently moved to a local supply chain and as a result has experienced a profound and immediate impact on the business. This has also had a positive effect on the provision of local jobs and helped deliver a much needed boost to the local economy.

Simon Lane, managing director of HEL Performance Products, said: "Frankly, like the majority of our competitors in the motorcycle component industry, we could not see any viable alternative to the sourcing of specialist parts from China. However, being so reliant on an overseas supply chain exposed the business to risks and gave us some real headaches in terms of honouring customer orders, stock-holding, cashflow management and quality control. But that’s all history."

£3.5 million boost from Europe set to help South West Manufacturers

Thousands of manufacturers in the South West are expected to benefit with the news that the South West European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) is set to invest £3.5 million over the next three years to enable the Manufacturing Advisory Service in the South West (MAS-SW) to continue to help local businesses compete more effectively in the marketplace.

MAS-SW will use the European funding to provide a range of manufacturing services to ensure the region’s small and medium-sized businesses improve their competitiveness, productivity and performance through hands-on expert help and guidance.

Arthur Richardson, chief executive of MAS-SW, said: "At a time when there is so much doom and gloom around, this is great news for the region’s manufacturers. There is no disputing that the unprecedented economic situation is proving to be a challenge but MAS-SW can provide tangible help to improve firms’ operations, quality and delivery to make significant and real improvements to cash flow and ultimately, the bottom line."

Nigel Howells, head of competitiveness at the South West RDA, said: "This EU funding will help introduce more manufacturing businesses in the region to MAS-SW’s expert guidance to ensure South West firms are at the forefront of the increasingly competitive global marketplace. It is all about arming local businesses with the skills and ammunition they need to succeed and to ensure that they are ready for the upturn when it happens."

BiS Valves diversify for future development

Following the death of joint M.D., Matthew Smith, and the resulting company restructure, BiS Valves Ltd, which manufactures a range of standard pressure and flow control products for liquid and gas, were keen to diversify and prepare the business for future growth.

To achieve this, Bournemouth-based BiS Valves decided to take on the support of manufacturing trouble-shooters MAS-SW and UK Trade and Investment (UKTI), specialists in helping businesses succeed in international markets.

The company which employs 43 staff required assistance at two key levels; the shop floor and the board. "After our restructure we felt the need to take a step back and devise a clear strategy for future development" said David Kelly, managing director of BiS Valves. "We also decided that shop floor efficiency was another area in which we could seek improvement with the help of MAS-SW."

Engineering student wins Innovation Manufacturing award

University of Plymouth mechanical engineering student Sean Wheeler was last month awarded an MAS-SW award for Innovation within Manufacturing. Sean won the award during a ‘Year in Industry’ placement with Rittal-CSM Ltd, which produces server racks for the IT industry.

Sean reduced the number of defective panels produced by the Rittal paint plant, increasing panel capacity by 100 per cent, whilst reducing both manpower and defects. His work will save the company around £22,500 a year.

Jon Hurrell, Lean Specialist for Devon and Cornwall, and one of the judges of the competition, commented that MAS-SW had been impressed with the way that lean tools and techniques had been used in problem solving for the project.

Sean also received a cheque for £250 from the Plymouth Manufacturer’s Group (PMG) for winning the best manufacturing project.
