MAS growth strategy is a steel for South West manufacturer

12th Jan 2009

Taunton Fabrications, manufacturer of fabricated metal products, has been successfully implementing a devised strategy and plan for growth with hands-on support from MAS specialists.

Most recently the company took advantage of MAS’ Downturn Readiness Review (DRR). Although Taunton Fabrications had not been impacted by the downturn, with its client portfolio spanning housing, commercial property and general construction it was keen to batten down the hatches and prepare the business for potential challenges on the horizon.

Dave Phelps, director at Taunton Fabrications, commented: “Through the Strategic Management Programme (SMP), delivered by the MAS, we have become accustomed to constantly reviewing the business and making changes to enhance business productivity and opportunities for growth.

“We took part in the DRR not because we were shedding business, in fact we are tremendously busy at the moment and recruiting to meet customer demand, but to ensure we keep the business we have and continually add value to our customers.

“The DRR provided us with a wider perspective through a series of ‘what if’ scenarios in terms of our customer base, finances, plans, product line, market changes and internal structures. We also examined what our competitors are doing and thinking and how we could turn their financial problems to our advantage and pick up a larger slice of the market.”

Time was also spent with MAS specialists exploring the changing needs of Taunton Fabrication’s customers and how the company could get its messages across in terms of financial security, quality service and premium product in the face of downturn deals from competitors.

David said: “Three years ago our market was very different and looking three years from now it will significantly change again. Initiatives such as the DRR have helped us to look at all angles of our business, review where we are, challenges we may face in the coming months and how we can get the business ready and equipped to secure market share. The business has grown tremendously over the past 18 years, with the support of organisations such as MAS. The DRR is another invaluable initiative from the service which has helped us to prepare for future growth and success.”
